Inspiration, excellence, discovery, and family are words often used by Balfour scholars and graduates when describing the program. Under the guidance of Director Carla Oblas, the academy prepares students in grades seven through twelve for college through summer enrichment courses, which are augmented by mentoring and tutoring during the school year.
“Balfour sparked my lifelong joy of intellectual and academic discovery,” says Makeda Keegan, AS’00, an alumna of both the academy and Northeastern.
In her three decades of teaching, Oblas has helped fuel the academic success of Boston’s inner city students—and she knows that a strong support system like Balfour’s is vital to getting ahead. “85 percent of our scholars have gone on to college,” she says, “and 96 percent have graduated.”
Oblas has named Balfour as the beneficiary of her retirement plan because she aspires to ensure that other students benefit from this exceptional learning experience. “I want Balfour to endure and grow, and I want to continue changing the lives of Boston’s students.” By empowering generations of young men and women to pursue and realize their dreams, her gift will achieve exactly that.
